What is a Windows VPS used for?

Programs that run only on Windows and services built on Microsoft technology feel most at home on a Windows VPS. Here are four common uses and the sizes that fit them.

How do Linux VPS and Windows VPS differ?

Both are created in the same regions with the same billing. The difference is the operating system, how you manage it and the specs it needs. Check first which side the software you want to use runs on, and choosing is easy.

Windows VPS

Windows Server managed through the Remote Desktop screen

Best for

  • Services using ASP.NET, IIS and SQL Server
  • Business software that installs only on Windows
  • When you would rather manage on screen than with commands
  • Microsoft tools such as PowerShell and Active Directory

Linux cloud VPS

A light, affordable server managed with SSH commands

Best for

  • WordPress, PHP and Node.js websites
  • Docker containers and open source tools
  • Personal projects starting on small specs
  • Spreading work across several small servers

What is better about a Windows VPS than Linux?

The biggest advantage of a Windows VPS is the familiar screen. Connect with Remote Desktop and the Start menu, File Explorer and Server Manager open just like on a PC, so you can install programs and change settings without knowing commands. Even teams new to servers can get to work from day one.

The second is software compatibility. Software built for the Microsoft environment, such as ASP.NET Framework, IIS, SQL Server, Exchange integration tools and Windows business programs, runs as is on a Windows VPS with no conversion. Moving programs you already used on a Windows PC to the server is done by installing them the same way.

Linux runs lighter on the same specs and costs less, so for regular websites and open source tools, a Linux cloud VPS is more economical. That is why splitting things up, with services that truly need Windows on a Windows VPS and the rest of your web and automation work on Linux VPS, balances cost and convenience.

Windows Server 2025 or 2022 VPS: which should I choose?

For new servers, we recommend Windows Server 2025. As the latest version, it has newer security features and management tools and will receive updates for a long time to come. For services using the latest .NET and newer SQL Server versions, starting on 2025 means fewer operating system changes later.

If your existing software has finished testing on a specific version, choose Windows Server 2022. Many business programs provide install guidance based on 2022, so it is good for moving office servers over as they are. Both versions are available at the same monthly price.

You can change the version later. Reinstall the operating system from the control panel and it switches to the other version. A reinstall erases the data on the disk, so move the files you need first, then type the server name to turn on the Reinstall button. When the reinstall finishes, connect again with Remote Desktop and install the programs you need.

Windows VPS FAQ

Answers on Windows VPS pricing, licensing and choosing a version

What is a Windows VPS?

A Windows VPS is a virtual private server with the Windows Server operating system installed. You get your own vCPU, memory and SSD carved from a physical server by virtualization, and manage it on screen like a PC by connecting with Remote Desktop. It is widely used to keep Windows-only programs, ASP.NET websites and SQL Server databases running around the clock.

How much does a Windows VPS cost per month?

The smallest, Windows VPS 4, is $25.00 per month with 4 vCPU, 16GB memory, 200GB NVMe and 4TB transfer per month. Windows VPS 6 is $39.00, Windows VPS 8 $59.00, and the largest, with 12 vCPU and 48GB, $99.00. The Windows Server license and IP addresses are all included in the prices in the table.

Do I need to buy a Windows Server license separately?

No need to buy one separately. The Windows Server license is included in the Windows VPS monthly price, so the server is activated and ready to use as soon as it is created. For programs that need separate licenses, such as SQL Server or Office, prepare each product's license and install them yourself.

How do I connect to a Windows VPS?

When the server is ready, the control panel shows the IP address and administrator password. Open Remote Desktop Connection on a Windows PC, or the remote desktop app on Mac and phones, enter the IP address and password, and the server desktop opens. For security, the password can be viewed again for only 7 days, so change it right after your first login.

Should I choose Windows Server 2025 or 2022?

For new services, the latest version, Windows Server 2025, is the right fit. If the software you want to use gives guidance based on 2022, choose 2022. You can change the version later by reinstalling the operating system from the control panel; a reinstall erases disk data, so move it first.

What specs does a Windows VPS need?

For one website or a few business programs, Windows VPS 4 with 4 vCPU and 16GB memory is enough. If several people connect at once or you run SQL Server too, we recommend Windows VPS 8 with 32GB memory, and for bringing large databases and several services onto one server, Windows VPS 12 with 48GB.

How do I pay for a Windows VPS?

Pay for the chosen period (1, 3, 6 or 12 months) in full when creating the server. Save 10% for 3 months, 15% for 6 months and 25% for 12 months. Pay the renewal invoice before the period ends to keep your server running. Refunds go to your account credit and are applied automatically to your next invoice. The minimum payment is $25.

What happens to my Windows server if I don't pay the invoice?

If you don't pay the renewal invoice when the period ends, the server is suspended, and you can renew it by paying within 3 days. After 3 days the server and its disk data are deleted, so for business servers it is best to pay the renewal invoice before the period ends. Check your remaining time and renewal price anytime in the control panel.

Can I run a mail server on a Windows VPS?

Port 25, used for sending mail, is closed to prevent spam. Use port 587 or 465 of an external mail sending service to send notification emails from your business software. Other ports, including Remote Desktop, web and database ports, are opened as you like in the firewall.

How many Windows VPS can I create in one account?

You can create up to 10 servers per account. You can mix Windows VPS and Linux VPS, so a setup with web on Linux and business software on Windows is managed from the same account. Each server has its own billing period, so deleting servers you are done with stops only their fees. Up to 3 accounts can be created from the same IP.
