NFS file storage: shared storage for multiple servers

Managed shared file storage where several servers in the same region use one folder together

  • 50GB to 1TB capacity
  • NFS v4 mounts
  • Several servers at once

NFS file storage is managed storage that mounts a network-connected shared folder on several servers at once so they can read and write the same files together. HELPER VPS file storage is $25.00 for 500GB and connects right away to several servers in the same region over NFS v4.

If you need a disk for just one server Block storage

What is NFS file storage used for?

For setups where several servers need to see the same files, shared file storage is the simplest answer. Here are four common uses.

How do file storage, block storage and object storage differ?

The three kinds of storage connect differently and suit different uses. If several servers need the same folder, file storage fits; to grow the disk of a single server, block storage fits.

NFS file storage

A shared folder mounted by several servers together

Best for

  • A common upload folder for several web servers
  • Kubernetes shared volumes
  • Work folders shared by a team
  • Programs that work with folders and files

Block storage

An extra disk attached to one server

Best for

  • Database storage
  • When growing a single server's capacity
  • Work where disk speed matters
  • When you want to choose the file system yourself

Object storage

TB-scale storage used through the S3 API

Best for

  • Backups and data kept long term
  • Files to be downloaded straight from the web
  • Large data at TB scale
  • When your app supports the S3 API

How do I choose and connect NFS file storage?

First, measure the size of the files to share and add the growth you expect. For a website upload folder, add the photos and attachments piled up so far to what will be added over a year; for a team work folder, base it on the size of the projects handled at the same time. You can move to a bigger size later, so starting with what you need now is fine.

Next, choose a region. File storage connects to servers in the same region over a private network, so choose the city where the servers that will use it are. If you have no servers yet, placing servers and file storage together in a city close to the countries with the most users gives the fastest responses.

Connecting is simple. Tell us which servers will share it when you order, and our team prepares the storage and gives you the access address. Then install the NFS client on your server and attach it to the folder you want with a single mount command. Add it to /etc/fstab and it reconnects automatically when the server restarts; attach it the same way on a second and third server and they all see the same folder.

How much does file storage cost per month?

The smallest, 500GB, is $25.00 per month. 1TB is $45.00, 2TB $85.00, and the amount in the table is the full monthly price. There are no extra fees based on the number of connected servers or reads and writes, so the storage fee stays the same as you add servers.

Copying the same data to each server needs as much disk as you have servers, but sharing one file storage means you need only one copy of the data. Even when growing from two to five web servers, there is no need to move the upload folder again, cutting management time too.

Payment is made by invoice at order time. The first month is invoiced when you order, and you renew monthly by paying each new invoice. The minimum payment is $25.

How to use file storage safely and fast

The first step with a shared folder is deciding which servers can access it. Tell us the servers to connect and our team sets an access list so only those servers can mount it, and the folder stays invisible to other servers and the outside. When you add new servers, let us know on the support page after your first payment and we add them to the access list.

If several servers edit the same files at the same time, configure your programs to use file locking. NFS v4 supports file locking, preventing two servers from overwriting the same file at once. Setups that save each file under a new name, such as website uploads, work fine with no special settings.

To push speed further, cache small frequently read files on each server and read large originals straight from file storage. Keep data a single server reads and writes very often, such as database files, on block storage, and gather only files shared by several servers on file storage to get the best of both.

File storage FAQ

Answers on NFS file storage pricing, connection and capacity

How much does file storage cost per month?

500GB is $25.00 per month. 1TB is $45.00, 2TB $85.00, and the amount in the table is the full monthly price. The price does not change with the number of connected servers.

What is NFS file storage?

NFS (Network File System) is a standard way to attach a folder across the network and use it like a folder on your own server. File storage is shared storage connected to several servers at once this way, and every server sees the same files and folder structure.

How many servers can I connect?

You can connect several servers at once as long as they are in the same region. Several web servers, worker servers and Kubernetes nodes mount the same folder together to read and write. You can create up to 10 servers per account, so the whole setup fits in one account.

Can servers in other regions use it too?

File storage connects over a private network in the same region, so it is used by servers in the same city as the storage. If you have servers in several regions, place file storage in each region and keep copies between regions in sync with a tool such as rsync.

How do I mount it?

Install the nfs-common package on Ubuntu and Debian, or nfs-utils on AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux, then put the access address and folder in a mount command. Add one line to /etc/fstab and it reconnects automatically when the server restarts.

Can I increase the capacity later?

Yes, you can switch to a larger size and keep going. Stored files and the servers' mount settings stay as they are, and only the storage grows. For a size change, request it on the support page after your first payment and we will guide you.

How is it different from block storage?

Block storage is a disk attached to one server, so only that server uses it. File storage is shared storage where several servers use the same folder at once. For uses where one server reads and writes quickly, such as databases, block storage fits; for uses where several servers see the same files together, file storage fits.

How do I pay for file storage?

Pay the server fee with your chosen cryptocurrency at checkout. The fee for your selected period is charged when you order, and paying the renewal invoice before the period ends keeps the server running.

What happens to my stored files if I don't pay the renewal invoice?

If you don't pay the renewal invoice when the period ends, file storage stops and is deleted 3 days later. Pay the renewal invoice before the period ends and your shared folder carries on without a break.

Are backups included too?

File storage is working storage shared by several servers. For important data, regularly sending copies to object storage or a storage VPS in another region is safer. A common setup sends only daily changes with Restic or rclone.
