Game server VPS: Palworld and Rust dedicated servers

The HELPER VPS game server VPS is a Linux cloud server for running dedicated servers for games such as Palworld, Rust, Valheim and CS2 yourself with SteamCMD, starting at $25.00 per month. Handle config files, mods and world saves freely with root access, and place your server in a city close to the friends you play with.

Which plan should I choose for a game server?

The memory a game server needs varies greatly with the game and the number of concurrent players. Below are starting points for popular game servers; check usage as you go and adjust your plan.

Every plan has the same specs and price in all 40 cities. Choose a city close to the country where your players gather for lower ping, and as your world grows, attach an extra disk for plenty of storage.

Which games can I host on a game server VPS?

Most dedicated servers downloaded with SteamCMD run officially on Linux. From small servers among friends to community servers, here are five popular games and the server types that fit them.

What are the benefits of keeping your game server at HELPER VPS?

    Tools used alongside game servers

Install game servers with Linux, SteamCMD and Docker, and add management tools for easy operation. Watch server health with Grafana and Uptime Kuma, and automate restarts and backups with Python scripts.

Place your server close to your users

Choose the location closest to your users among 40 cities in 31 countries.

How do I install a game dedicated server on a VPS?

Most Steam game servers are downloaded with SteamCMD, an official command-line tool. Create a server with Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12, install the 32-bit libraries and SteamCMD, create a separate user account for the game server and download the server files with that account. Run the app_update command with each game's app ID and installation and updates are done together.

Once installed, start the server with the game's start script, and register it as a systemd service so the game server comes up automatically when the server restarts. Running it inside screen or tmux is also common if you want to watch the console while managing it. If you know Docker, run each game's public server image on the Docker app image for an even simpler start.

Finally, open the game ports in the firewall. The defaults are UDP 8211 for Palworld, UDP 2456 to 2457 for Valheim, 27015 for CS2 and 28015 for Rust. Some games also need a query port opened to show your server in the in-game server list, so check each game server's official guidance too. Change basic settings such as server name, password and max players in each game's config file, and restart the server after changes to apply them right away.

How much memory does a game server need?

For game servers, memory is the first thing to consider when choosing a plan. Light servers such as Valheim or CS2 are fine with 12 GB, and Rust uses 16 GB or more depending on map size and players. Palworld's official guidance recommends 16 GB of memory, and with many players or long uptime, usage grows, so a 32 GB memory optimized plan gives more room.

The CPU handles the computation a game server does at once. If you want even ticks during busy evenings, a dedicated CPU plan that does not share vCPUs with other customers is a great fit. The disk is used for saving worlds and loading maps, so an NVMe plan makes server starts and saves faster.

We recommend starting one plan up and watching memory and CPU usage for about a week. If specs fall short, create a new server on a bigger plan in the same account and move your world saves over, and delete leftover servers right away so you use only what you need.

What should I take care of to run a game server reliably?

World save files are the most valuable data in running a server. With the automatic backup option on when you create the server, the whole server is kept, and when you need a restore, request it on the support page. On top of that, compressing the save folder daily with cron and copying it to another server or storage gives extra peace of mind.

If you run a public server, choosing the DDoS protection option keeps your server standing steadily against traffic attacks. Allow admin SSH only with SSH keys, and keep remote admin ports such as RCON open only to your IP for safety. When a game update comes out, the server must match the same version for players to connect, so adding the SteamCMD update to your restart script is handy.

If you want to run several games, keeping up to 10 servers in one account and splitting servers by game is clean. You can also open servers in different cities for communities in different countries, and for Minecraft, the Minecraft VPS page covers Java and Bedrock setup in detail.

Game server VPS: Palworld and Rust dedicated servers FAQ

Can I host a Palworld dedicated server on a VPS?

Yes, Palworld has an official Linux server that you download with SteamCMD and run. Its official guidance recommends 16 GB of memory, so start with a memory optimized plan, and choose a 32 GB plan for many players.

Which plan fits a Rust server?

Start small maps with few players on a 12 GB memory plan, and for plugin-heavy community servers we recommend a dedicated CPU plan or one with 16 GB or more.

Can I run an ARK server too?

ARK: Survival Evolved servers run on Linux VPS. The official ARK: Survival Ascended server is for Windows, so please open it on a Windows VPS.

    What about Windows-only game servers?

The plans on this page are Linux servers. For game servers that run only on Windows, choose the Windows VPS product with Windows Server installed.

Which city should I put my server in?

Choose a city close to the country where most of the people you play with live for low ping. You can create it in any of 40 cities with the same plans and prices.

Can I install mods and plugins?

Yes, with root access you can freely change mod loaders, plugins and config files. After game updates, keep your mod versions matched too.

What if my world save files are lost?

With the automatic backup option on, the whole server is kept, and restores are requested on the support page. Copying the save folder somewhere else every day adds even more peace of mind.

    What if I am attacked?

Choose the DDoS protection option when creating the server and traffic attacks are filtered so your game keeps running. We also recommend opening admin ports only to your own IP.

Can I run several game servers in one account?

Yes, you can keep up to 10 servers per account. Splitting servers by game keeps updates and restarts from affecting each other for tidy management, and you can open them in different cities for different communities.

How do I pay for game servers?

Pay for the chosen period when you create the server. Before the period ends, pay the renewal fee to keep the server running.
