HELPER VPS

VPN VPS: personal VPN servers with WireGuard and OpenVPN

The HELPER VPS VPN VPS is a Linux cloud server where you put WireGuard or OpenVPN yourself to build a personal VPN for just you and your team, starting at $25.00 per month. A fixed public IPv4 and IPv6 address and root access come with it, and choose the one-click WireGuard image to set up your VPN as soon as the server is on.

Which plans fit a personal VPN server?

A VPN uses little CPU and memory; the number of devices connected at once and the amount of traffic are what decide the plan. The five combinations below are common starting points, from a VPN just for you to one linking company offices.

Every plan has the same specs and price in all 40 cities. Choose a city close to the people connecting and web speed stays fast even with the VPN on.

What can I do with a VPN VPS?

With your own VPN server you decide the line and settings, so it has many uses. From a secure tunnel just for you to a private network linking teams and offices, here are five common setups.

What are the benefits of keeping your VPN server at HELPER VPS?

    Tools used alongside VPN servers

Most VPN programs and management tools run officially on Linux and Docker.

Place your server close to your users

Choose the location closest to your users among 40 cities in 31 countries.

How do I build a WireGuard VPN server?

The fastest way is choosing the WireGuard app image when creating the server. Once the server is on, connect over SSH, create key pairs for the server and devices, write the server address and device public keys in the wg0.conf config file, and bring the interface up with wg-quick. WireGuard uses UDP port 51820 by default, so open this port in the firewall.

On the device side, there are official WireGuard apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux. Import the device config file created on the server into the app, or scan a QR code made with qrencode with your phone, and you are connected. To send all internet traffic through the VPN, set AllowedIPs to 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0; to send only internal network traffic, list just the private ranges.

For easier management, create the server with the Docker app image and run a management interface such as wg-easy. Add and remove devices and see connection status in your browser. Set the firewall so the management interface opens only inside the VPN or from your IP for safety.

How do WireGuard and OpenVPN differ?

WireGuard is a modern VPN built into the Linux kernel, with short code and simple settings, delivering faster speeds on the same server. Connections resume quickly even as phones switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, so it is the most common choice for personal VPNs and server-to-server links. If you are building a new VPN, we recommend starting with WireGuard.

OpenVPN is a long-established VPN with very broad support for devices and operating systems and solid certificate-based user management. It uses UDP port 1194 by default and can also run on TCP port 443 if needed. It fits when you must use an OpenVPN client because of company firewall policies or existing equipment.

Both programs can run on the same server. Just set different ports and internal address ranges, and split connections so new devices use WireGuard and older equipment uses OpenVPN. With an install script or Docker image, OpenVPN is ready in one go, certificate creation included.

What should I take care of to run a VPN server safely and fast?

First, add an SSH key and choose it when creating the server for safer access than password login. Open only SSH and the VPN port in the firewall, and set server packages to receive security updates automatically with unattended-upgrades. If a device is lost, just remove that device's public key from the server config and it is blocked right away.

Speed depends most on the distance between the server and the people connecting. Choose a city close to the country you mainly connect from, and if your team is in several countries, it works well to keep several servers in one account and run separate regional VPNs. You can have up to 10 servers per account.

VPN servers follow the acceptable use policy too. Use them for privacy, remote work and server-to-server connections, and let only people you issued keys to connect, so it never becomes an open proxy anyone can use, keeping you in line with the policy. Connect an external mail sending service instead of port 25 to send email reliably too.

VPN VPS: personal VPN servers with WireGuard and OpenVPN FAQ

Can I use a VPN VPS right after creating it?

Yes, choose the one-click WireGuard image and once the server is on, just create device keys and connect. Installing it yourself on a regular Ubuntu or Debian image takes only a few minutes too.

Should I choose WireGuard or OpenVPN?

For new setups, we recommend WireGuard, which is simple to configure and fast. If you need an OpenVPN client because of existing equipment or company policy, use OpenVPN, and you can even run both on one server.

Which ports do I need to open?

WireGuard uses UDP 51820 by default and OpenVPN UDP 1194. Opening just SSH and this VPN port in the firewall is enough.

How many devices can I connect?

With WireGuard, create one key per device and add as many as you like. For personal and family use, even the smallest plan is plenty; teams with many simultaneous connections should choose a plan with more vCPUs.

Is the VPN server's IP address fixed?

Yes, each server gets one public IPv4 address and one IPv6 address that stay the same until you delete the server. Put this address in allow lists to organize access to internal tools and admin interfaces.

    Which city should I choose?

Choose a city close to the people who mainly connect for the best speed. You can create it in any of 40 cities with the same plans and prices.

Can I share it with teammates or family?

Yes, issue a separate key for each person and share it. Letting only key holders connect keeps it from becoming an open proxy, which the acceptable use policy prohibits, and keeping it free of spam and attack traffic lets you use it reliably for a long time.

    How do I pay?

Pay for the chosen period when you create the server. Before the period ends, pay the renewal fee to keep the server running.

Is OpenVPN installed with one click too?

The one-click image is prepared with WireGuard, and OpenVPN goes on an Ubuntu or Debian image with an install script or Docker image. Many methods finish everything, certificate creation included, in one go, so even first-timers set it up quickly.

Can I send email from a VPN server too?

Sending email by connecting an external mail sending service gives good delivery rates and stability. Use port 587 and the credentials provided by the sending service instead of the server's port 25.
