What is managed DNS used for?

Anywhere that has a domain needs DNS. Here are four common cases.

How do managed DNS, registrar DNS and self-hosted DNS differ?

All three connect your domain to your server, but who manages them and how much effort they take differs. If you want to manage servers and DNS in one place, managed DNS is the easiest.

HELPER VPS managed DNS

Free, in the same account as your servers

Best for

  • When bringing servers and DNS together in one account
  • When you have several domains
  • When you change records often as you move servers
  • When you want DNS at no extra cost

Registrar DNS

The DNS that comes with the place you bought your domain

Best for

  • When you have one domain with just a few records
  • When you rarely change servers
  • When you are used to the registrar's dashboard
  • When you do not want to change name servers

Self-hosted DNS server

Install name server software on a VPS

Best for

  • When you want to fine-tune how DNS behaves
  • When you need internal-only names
  • When you want to learn to run name servers
  • When you can manage two or more servers yourself

How do I connect my domain to managed DNS?

After your first payment, tell us the domain name to connect and the records you need on the support page. Our team creates the zone, adds the records and replies with the nameserver addresses to use for that domain. If you were using another DNS, send your current record list too and we copy it over as is, so your site and email keep working during the switch.

Next, change the name servers to the HELPER VPS name servers in the dashboard of the registrar where you bought the domain. The change usually takes a few hours, at most about a day, to spread worldwide. In the meantime, keep the records matched so the old and new name servers give the same answers and visitors notice no difference.

If you need to add or change records after the setup, let us know on the support page after your first payment. When you create a new server and move over, just change the IP address in the A record, and lowering the TTL in advance makes the new address spread faster.

Is managed DNS really free?

Managed DNS is free. Register domains with no limit on zones, and our team takes care of record setup too. You can register domains not used with a server as well, keeping mail-only domains and domains in preparation in one place.

Our name servers run on anycast. Name servers with the same address exist in several regions, and the nearest one answers each query. Domain lookups are fast wherever your visitors are, and if one location is busy, another keeps answering.

Servers and other products are paid with your chosen payment method, and DNS has no fee. The support page opens after your first payment, so pay at least $25 when you create a server and request your records on the support page together with the server IP address.

How do I use DNS records?

Websites start with A and AAAA records. Put the server's IPv4 address in an A record and its IPv6 address in an AAAA record for your domain name, and visitors reach your server whatever network they use. Point subnames such as www to the main domain with a CNAME record, so when the address changes you only update one place.

For email, MX records set the servers that receive mail, with priority numbers separating the first and second mail servers. So your outgoing mail is not classed as spam, publish SPF in a TXT record to declare which servers may send, and add your DKIM public key and DMARC policy as well.

CAA records set which authorities may issue certificates for the domain, keeping it more secure. SRV records are used where a port and service name are needed together, such as game servers, voice calls and messengers, and NS records are used to delegate a subdomain to other name servers.

How do I change DNS when moving servers?

About a day before moving, ask us to shorten the TTL of the records for the domain you are moving to a few minutes. TTL is how long other name servers remember the answer, so with a short TTL the new address spreads quickly when you change it.

Move your site and data to the new server, check it opens properly, then tell us to change the A and AAAA records to the new server's address. Within minutes of the change most visitors reach the new server; keep the old server on for about a day and clean it up once all traffic has moved over.

If there are no problems for a few days after the move, we raise the TTL back to about an hour. The same method keeps visitors connected without interruption when you place a new server in another region or move to bigger specs.

How can managed DNS keep my domain more secure?

First, set which authorities may issue certificates for the domain with a CAA record. Only the authorities you set can issue certificates, preventing anyone from quietly getting a certificate for your domain elsewhere.

For email, it is best to have all three of SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Receiving mail servers check these values to confirm mail sent in your domain's name is genuine, reducing spoofed mail reaching your customers.

When asking us to change records, include the current and new values for a faster check, and when needed we can roll back to the previous values right away to keep your site and email running.

How much does managed DNS cost?

Managed DNS FAQ

Answers on using free managed DNS and its records

Is managed DNS free?

Yes, it is free. Register domains with no limit on the number of zones, and after your first payment, tell us your records on the support page and our team sets them up. DNS has no fee; fees are only charged when you use servers or other products.

What is managed DNS?

A service that runs, on your behalf, the name servers that translate domain names into server IP addresses. No need to install name server software; just tell us the records you need. HELPER VPS handles operations and updates so name servers in several regions give the same answers.

Which records can I use?

You can use A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, CAA and NS records. Set up websites, email, domain verification, certificate authority restrictions, and even game and voice services.

Does it work with a domain bought anywhere?

Domains from any registrar can be connected. Just change the name servers to the HELPER VPS name servers in your registrar's dashboard. Domain ownership and renewal stay with your registrar as now; only record management moves here.

How long after changing name servers does it take effect?

It usually takes effect within a few hours, at most about a day. Copy your existing records over before switching and your site and email stay up in the meantime.

How should I set the TTL?

Normally keep it at about an hour, and ask us to shorten it to a few minutes a day before moving servers so the new address spreads quickly. Once things settle after the move, we set it back to a longer value.

How do I set up email?

Send us the MX records and the SPF, DKIM and DMARC values your mail service gives you on the support page, and we add them as they are. With all three in place, the mail you send reaches inboxes reliably and mail spoofing your domain is filtered out.

Can I use DNS without a server?

Yes. Register and manage mail-only domains and domains pointing to servers elsewhere too. When you later create a HELPER VPS server, just change the records to its address.

Is reverse DNS set here too?

Reverse DNS for an IP address is a setting on the IP address side. For reverse DNS of your server IP address, see the guidance on the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses page.

How do I change DNS records?

After your first payment, tell us the domain and the records to change on the support page and our team changes them. Server tasks such as creating servers and powering them on and off can be handled in code with an API key after your first payment.
