A VPS private network (VPC) is a network that connects servers in the same region to each other over internal addresses separated from the internet. HELPER VPS private network is free within the same region, and internal traffic between servers does not count toward monthly transfer.

What setups is a VPS private network used for?

Once you have two or more servers, it is best to move connections between servers onto internal addresses. Skipping public addresses simplifies the setup and saves transfer. Here are four common setups.

How is a private network different from connecting over public IPs?

Every server has public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and can connect to others. Adding a private network keeps connections between servers on separate internal addresses, splitting roles cleanly. Thinking of the entrance users use and the passage between servers separately makes the choice easy.

VPS private network

Connect servers in the same region over internal addresses

Best for

  • Connections between web servers and databases
  • Large file transfers between servers
  • Internal services that need not be open to the internet
  • When you want monthly transfer used only for user traffic

Public IP connections

Connect from anywhere over IPv4 and IPv6 addresses

Best for

  • Websites and APIs users connect to
  • Connections with servers in other regions
  • Connections with outside services
  • Services run on a single server

What is a VPS private network (VPC)?

VPC stands for virtual private cloud, a feature that creates an internal network just for you inside the cloud. Create a VPS private network and servers in the same region each get one more private address alongside their public address, and connect to each other with it. Private addresses are used only among servers in the same network, so you can keep internal services apart from the internet.

Choose the private range you want within 10.0.0.0/8. For example, set something like 10.10.0.0/24 and addresses within it are assigned to each server. Split ranges by service and you can tell which server plays which role from its address alone, and write firewall rules simply by range.

A private network groups servers within the same region. Connections stay inside data centers in the same city, so distances are short, and when you create more servers you just choose the same region and add them to the network. If you have servers in several countries, create one private network per region. Using a different range for each region makes management easy.

What can a private network save me?

The first thing you save is transfer. HELPER VPS servers' monthly transfer counts traffic over public addresses, and traffic exchanged between servers inside a private network is not counted. Even if your web servers and database exchange data all day, the transfer for user connections stays intact.

Next, you save setup time. Internal-only services such as databases, caches and admin tools need only be open on private addresses, cutting down the work of blocking public ports one by one. Add a single private range rule to the cloud firewall and there is almost never a need to edit rules as you add servers.

Finally, cost. The private network itself is free within the same region, and when you need to spread user connections, add load balancer 1 for $4.71 per month. Network costs are small, so even small services can start with a clean structure from the beginning.

How much does a VPS private network cost?

A VPS private network is free within the same region. Add a load balancer for $4.71 per month when you want to spread user connections across several servers.

VPS private network FAQ

Answers on VPS private network pricing, ranges and how to connect

Is the VPS private network free?

Yes, it is free within the same region. There is no fee for creating a private network and connecting servers in the same region, and internal traffic between servers does not count toward monthly transfer either. If you need a load balancer to spread user connections across several servers, add load balancer 1 for $4.71 per month.

What is a VPC?

VPC stands for virtual private cloud, a feature that creates an internal network just for you inside the cloud. Servers in the same VPC connect to each other over private addresses, managed separately from public addresses. At HELPER VPS, the VPS private network plays this role. You can create it for free within the same region.

How do I choose the private address range?

Choose the range you want within 10.0.0.0/8. For example, set something like 10.10.0.0/24 and addresses within it are assigned to each server. Split ranges by service and you can tell a server's role from its address, and firewall rules become simple by range too. As you add servers, addresses are assigned within the same range, so there is little to change.

Can servers in other regions connect too?

A private network groups servers within the same region. Connections stay within the same city, so distances are short and the setup is simple. If you have servers in several countries, create one private network per region and link regions over public addresses with a VPN such as WireGuard. Using a different range in each region makes linking them easy.

Does internal traffic count toward transfer?

No, traffic exchanged between servers inside a private network does not count toward monthly transfer. Monthly transfer is based on traffic over public addresses, so even if your web servers and database exchange lots of data, the transfer for user connections stays intact. Setups that often move files to a backup server run without transfer worries too.

Does using a private network remove my public IP?

No, each server's public IPv4 address and IPv6 address stay as they are, and one private address is added. Use public addresses for services users connect to and private addresses for connections between servers. For internal-only servers, close public ports with the firewall for a clean setup. With each address's role clear, management is easy.

Can I open my database only on private addresses?

Yes. Configure the database to accept connections only on private addresses and close the database port on public addresses in the cloud firewall. Web servers connect to the database over private addresses, and the database stays invisible from the internet, making operations much easier. Even as you add servers, a single private range rule allows the new servers too.

What structure do I get with a load balancer?

The load balancer receives user connections on a public address and spreads them across several web servers in the same region. The web servers connect to database and cache servers over the private network. Load balancer 1 is $4.71 per month and the private network is free, so even small services can start with this structure. Use the same framework as you add servers.

Can I add servers to the network later?

Yes, just create a new server in the same region and add it to the private network. As your service grows, add servers with the same role one at a time, connect them to the network and put them in the load balancer's target list, and user connections are split across them too. New servers get private addresses in the same range and connect to existing servers right away, and if your firewall rules are written by range, there is nothing more to change.

How do I pay for the private network?

The private network is free to use right away. Fees for the servers and load balancers used with it are paid; the payment for your chosen billing period is processed at creation, then it renews automatically at the same amount on each billing date. Refunds go back to your account credit.
