Managed databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL and Valkey

Managed databases that take care of installs and backups so you can focus on your data

  • Daily automatic backups
  • TLS-encrypted connections
  • Renews monthly by invoice

Managed PostgreSQL is a database server where the service handles installing, configuring and backing up the database server, and you connect with an address and work only with your data. HELPER VPS managed PostgreSQL and MySQL start at $25.00 per month for 2 vCPU, 4GB memory and 100GB NVMe, and in-memory Valkey starts at $25.00 per month.

What are managed databases used for?

A database holds your service's most precious data, so daily management and backups matter more than the install. Managed databases fit when you want to hand this off and spend your time on app development. Here are four common cases.

PostgreSQL, MySQL or Valkey: which should I choose?

All three engines share the same billing and the same basic features. The difference is how they handle data. First check which engine the app you want to use was built for, and for a new service, choose based on the shape of your data.

Managed PostgreSQL

A feature-rich relational database

Best for

  • New web services and APIs
  • Services with many complex queries and aggregations
  • Using JSON data and relational data together
  • Dev teams who want to use extensions

Managed MySQL

The relational database many web apps use by default

Best for

  • WordPress and PHP-based apps
  • Open source programs built for MySQL
  • Read-heavy websites and online stores
  • Moving existing MySQL data over

Managed Valkey

A fast key-value store kept in memory

Best for

  • Caching frequently read data
  • Login sessions and carts
  • Job queues and leaderboards
  • Apps that use Redis-style commands

What is managed PostgreSQL, and how is it different from installing it yourself?

PostgreSQL is a long-refined open source relational database that handles a wide range, from relationships between tables, transactions and complex queries to JSON data. Managed PostgreSQL is an approach where the service takes care of installing, configuring and backing up this database on a server. You only need to think about your data and queries.

Installing it yourself on a VPS lets you decide every setting, but you have to handle operating system updates, disk space checks, backup schedules and connection security yourself. With managed, daily automatic backups and TLS-encrypted connections are included by default, so there is nothing extra to prepare. You can spend that time building app features.

Connect your app with the address, username and password you receive, and focus only on table design and queries. Start with a 4GB database, and as data and connections grow, choose bigger sizes in order: 8GB, 16GB. As size grows, vCPU and storage grow too, giving you headroom even at peak times.

What is Valkey, and when should I use it?

Valkey is an open source store that keeps data in memory and reads and writes it by key and value. It uses Redis-style commands and connections as they are, so most apps using Redis client libraries can connect by changing just the address. Clients exist for most languages, including Python, Node.js and PHP, so there is little new to learn.

Because it reads straight from memory, it is a great fit for data that needs fast responses, such as caches of values read many times, login sessions, carts and live leaderboards. Put Valkey in front of your main database and it takes repeated queries, giving your main database more breathing room. You can handle more connections with the same specs.

Choose the Valkey size by the amount of data it will hold. All data sits in memory, so decide among 4GB, 8GB and 16GB based on the number of keys and the size of values, and keep long-term data such as orders and members in PostgreSQL or MySQL. Splitting it this way gets you the strengths of both engines.

How much do managed databases cost?

Managed PostgreSQL and MySQL start at $25.00 per month for 2 vCPU, 4GB memory and 100GB NVMe, and Valkey starts at $25.00 per month for 4GB. Daily automatic backups and TLS-encrypted connections are included in the price.

Managed databases FAQ

Answers on managed PostgreSQL, MySQL and Valkey pricing and usage

How much does managed PostgreSQL cost per month?

A setup with 2 vCPU, 4GB memory and 50GB NVMe is $25.00 per month. 8GB is $45.00 and 16GB is $85.00, and managed MySQL starts at $25.00 for 4GB. Daily automatic backups and TLS-encrypted connections are included in every size, so the amount in the table is the full monthly price.

How are managed databases different from installing one yourself?

With managed, the service handles installing, configuring and daily backups, and you connect with an address and work only with your data. Installing it yourself on a VPS lets you decide every setting, but you also handle updates, backups and disk management yourself, so if you want to focus on app development, managed is easier. The smaller the service, the more this time saving shows.

Should I choose PostgreSQL or MySQL?

If the app you want to use specifies an engine, choosing that engine is best. WordPress and many PHP apps are built for MySQL, and for new services that handle lots of complex queries or JSON data, PostgreSQL fits well. Both engines have the same prices and sizes, so your choice of engine does not change the cost.

What is Valkey?

Valkey is an open source store that keeps data in memory and reads and writes it quickly by key and value. It uses Redis-style commands and connections as they are, so most apps using Redis clients connect by changing just the address, and it is widely used for caches, sessions and job queues. It starts at $25.00 per month for 4GB.

How do backups work?

Every managed database is backed up automatically every day. If you deleted data by mistake or need to undo a bad change, request a restore on the support page once your first payment is confirmed. Before important work, taking one more export from the app side gives extra peace of mind. There is no separate backup fee.

Are database connections secure?

Yes, connections between your app and the database are encrypted with TLS. Data is protected while it travels over the network, and connecting uses each database's own username and password. It is best to keep passwords outside your code, for example in your app's environment variables. Keep your app servers in the same region for faster connections too.

What size should I start with?

Start small websites and development use at 4GB, and move to a bigger size as users and data grow. Responses get faster when frequently read data fits in memory, so choose among 8GB and 16GB based on data size and concurrent connections. With each size, vCPU and NVMe storage grow too.

How do I pay for databases?

Pay by invoice to buy managed databases. The first month is charged, and you can renew it monthly at the same price. Refunds go to your account credit. Use it month by month and change size when needed.

What happens to my database if I don't pay the invoice?

If you don't pay the invoice by the billing date, the database is suspended, and you can renew it by paying within 3 days. If there is still no payment after 3 days, the database and its data are deleted, so check your invoice before the billing date and export important data separately. You can check your next billing date in the control panel.

Can I move data from elsewhere?

Yes, export with standard tools such as pg_dump for PostgreSQL or mysqldump for MySQL and load the file into the new database. If the data is large or you are unsure of the order, ask on the support page once your first payment is confirmed. After moving, just point the app's connection address to the new database.
