To choose the server to attach the disk to first Cloud VPS

What data is block storage good for?

Keep the operating system and programs on the main disk and growing data on the extra disk, and your server stays neatly organized. Here are four cases where adding a VPS disk is especially useful.

Extra disk or bigger server: which should I choose?

If only storage is short, an extra disk is more economical; if CPU and memory are short too, a bigger server is. Look at what your current server is missing and choose.

Block storage extra disk

Keep CPU and memory the same, add only space

Best for

  • Services where only files and data keep piling up
  • When a small server needs large storage
  • When you want to keep data apart from the operating system
  • When you want to grow only as needed at $0.028 per GB per month

A bigger cloud VPS

Grow CPU, memory and disk all at once

Best for

  • When growing traffic means CPU and memory are short too
  • When you want a larger database cache
  • When you want to consolidate several services on one server
  • Services that need more transfer as well

What is block storage, and how is it different from the main disk?

Block storage works like plugging one more hard disk into your server. The operating system recognizes the extra disk as a new drive, and you format it with the file system you want and mount it to a folder. Unlike object storage, which exchanges files one by one, it reads and writes like a regular disk, so databases and programs can use it as is.

The main disk holds the operating system and programs, and its capacity is set by the server size. The extra disk is separate, and you can choose any size from 50GB to 1,000GB, so a setup with small CPU and memory but large storage is possible. With data on a different disk from the operating system, management and cleanup become much easier.

HELPER VPS block storage is provided as NVMe block disks, handling frequently read and written data such as databases and uploads quickly. The extra disk fee is added to the server's monthly price and renews with it on each billing date, keeping the simple structure of one server, one price.

How do I attach and use an extra disk?

After choosing a region, size and operating system on the create page, click one of 50GB, 100GB, 250GB, 500GB or 1,000GB under extra disk in the options section. The monthly total of the server and disk fees appears right away in the summary on the right, and when you click Create, the server is prepared with the disk attached.

After connecting to the server, check the new disk's name with the lsblk command and format it once with a command such as mkfs.ext4. Then create a folder you like, such as /mnt/data, and attach it with the mount command to start saving files right away. Formatting is needed only once; after that, use it like a regular folder.

To have it attached automatically when the server restarts, add a line with the disk's UUID and mount folder to the /etc/fstab file. You can check the UUID with the blkid command. With this in place, the data folder stays attached after a restart, so your database and web server get straight back to work.

Block storage FAQ

Answers on block storage pricing, how to attach it and how to use it

How much does block storage cost?

It is $0.028 per GB per month. The monthly price for each size from 50GB to 1,000GB is shown in the cards above, and this amount is added to the server's monthly price and paid together by invoice. The amount shown is the entire disk fee.

How do I add a disk to my VPS?

After choosing a region, size and operating system on the create page, click the capacity you want under extra disk in the options section. The monthly total including the disk fee appears right away in the summary on the right, and when you click Create, the server is prepared with the disk attached. The extra disk is an option chosen when creating a server.

What if a server I already use needs more space?

An extra disk is an option chosen when creating a server, so the fastest way to add space to your current server is to create a new server with a disk of the size you want and move your data. If you have questions about moving, ask on the support page after your first payment. We will guide you through the steps that fit your server.

What kind of disk is the extra disk?

It is an NVMe block disk. The operating system sees it as a new drive separate from the main disk; format it once with the file system you want, mount it to a folder and use it like a regular disk. It is a good fit for frequently read and written data such as database data folders, uploads and logs. Keeping the operating system and data on different disks makes space management and cleanup much easier.

What do I need to do when using the extra disk for the first time?

Connect to the server, check the new disk's name with lsblk, format it with a command such as mkfs.ext4 and attach it to the folder you want with mount. To have it attached automatically after a restart, check the UUID with blkid and add a line to /etc/fstab, and you are set. Formatting is needed only the first time.

How is block storage different from object storage?

Block storage is a disk attached to your server, so the operating system reads and writes it like a regular drive and databases and programs use it as is. Object storage is storage where you upload and download files one by one, suited to backups and media shared by several servers or accessed from outside. For data inside your server, block storage is more convenient.

When is the extra disk fee charged?

It is charged together with the first month's server fee when you create the server, and you can renew it by paying the renewal invoice before the billing period ends. The disk and server share one billing period, so there is no separate date to remember. When you delete a server, the fee for its attached disk ends too. Check the next billing date and the monthly price including the disk anytime in the control panel.

What happens to the extra disk when the billing period ends?

When the billing period ends, the server stops, and if you pay the renewal invoice within 3 days, the server starts again. If not renewed, the data on the server and disk is deleted together, so the larger the disk, the more important it is to pay the renewal invoice before the billing period ends. Turning on automatic backups as well gives important data extra protection.

Which servers can I attach an extra disk to?

You can choose an extra disk at creation for standard SSD, high-performance NVMe, dedicated CPU and high-memory servers. The same sizes and unit price are offered wherever you place your server in 40 regions, and you can add automatic backups and DDoS protection too. Choose your operating system from Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream and FreeBSD.

How do I pay for block storage?

It is paid together with the server fee by invoice. When a refund is needed, it goes back to your account credit. You sign up with a single account token, and you can create up to 10 servers per account. Even if you choose different disk sizes for each server, they are all paid by the same invoice.
